It s not uncommon to find many married women opting for abortion. Although it is believed that abortion is for unmarried women, marriage and abortion is a usual instance. There might be a variety of reasons that drive women into taking a decision as serious as abortion. Sometimes it comes from the husband, who might not be in a financial position to raise another child. At times it can be the decision of the woman herself. There is a possibility that the child was conceived from an extra marital affair. There might also be career reasons or it might be because she is thinking about ending the marriage and a new baby will only make her position weaker.
The reasons may be never ending, but it’s also important to understand the adverse effect abortion has on the relationship between a couple. Sometimes such decisions are taken under a lot of pressure, which might lead to many misunderstandings between the two, eventually weakening the relationship. There arises a big risk of a dent, and sometimes even a break in a marriage.
Another effect of abortion might be that the communication between the couple might be handicapped. The question of betrayal arises, if the decision was taken autonomously. Due to this a large rift might develop between the couple, leading to a low self-esteem, depression and increased isolation.
Sometimes an abortion might hamper the very identity of family existence. The couple might gradually deviate from the family, looking for stronger relations, like friends and family. Sometimes also leading to an extra marital affair.
Besides the above consequences there might be many other like loss of interest in the partner- sexually or emotionally, an injury to the male ego and self-esteem, as the “father-protector”, turmoil in the family structure causing existing children also to suffer the effects of the abortion.
Abortion is a very serious issue especially for a married couple. If a couple is opting for an abortion it is advised they seek counseling and understand the pros and corns of it. There are many risks involved in such a decision, sometimes also leading to the end of a marriage.
