Marriage is a beautiful sacrament, wherein two individuals come together and spend the rest of their lives together. Marriage enables one to grow and build each other. No one is perfect, but helping your spouse overcome their weaknesses brings a lot of joy and satisfaction.
One common problem every couple face is the problem of low self-esteem. Life sometimes with all its complications can pull down people, and there are times wherein one of the spouses gets affected with things happening. It is therefore important to pull that spouse up and bring back your life to normalcy.
Your spouse may have low self-esteem due to three things
1) Disappointment
2) Despair
3) Failure
You can help your spouse by being
1) Genuine: Remember your spouse has gone through a very difficult phase (loss of baby, job, parent, friend, accident etc) it is important that you genuinely understand what he/she is going through. Give them the space they need. Do not pretend as if everything is okay and expect them to be normal. Instead gradually encourage them to come out of the trauma they are facing.
2) Listening: Listening is the greatest gift you can give your spouse. You don’t have to say anything intelligent. Just listening to them patiently will help increase your spouse’s self esteem greatly.
3) Encouragement: Encouraging your spouse is very important. Encourage your spouse to do small things and this will help you build their self-esteem. They will get back the confidence that they have lost and look at life in a positive outlook.
4) Don’t Push: Do not force your spouse to change; this will only worsen the situation. Instead respect what they are going through and help them get out of their shell by being patient.
