Anorexia is an eating disorder in which a person becomes fearful of gaining weight. Individuals with anorexia try to control their weight by starvation, excessive exercise, and diet pills. Although anorexia is mostly found in women, even men can become anorexic. Anorexia is a psychological and health issue and hence, it can cause numerous problems in marriage

  • An anorexic partner finds it difficult to receive and give love: People suffering from anorexia are obsessed with food and weight. Their self-esteem is based entirely on weight and appearance. Hence, they find it difficult to accept themselves or their partner’s love.
  • Loss of interest in social events, parties: Individuals with anorexia avoid going out to parties or restaurants with their partner. They fear they would consume too much food and gain weight. Hence, the marriage misses out on parties, social events, and eating out at restaurants.
  • Decreased sexual intimacy: Anorexia causes sexual problems such as loss of libido, and impotency in men.
  • Makes the individual unattractive: Anorexia makes a person extremely thin with thinning of hair, tooth decay, dry skin, sunken eyes, and pale skin.
  • Infertility: Anorexia causes irregular or absent menstruation (amenorrhea). This can cause infertility problems and problems during pregnancy.
  • Increases financial burden on the family: Anorexia can lead to health complications such as heart disease, low blood pressure, osteoporosis, gastrointestinal problems and neurological problems. This increases the financial burden and stress on the family

Individuals with anorexia suffer from anxiety, depression, and mood swings, which can severely affect the marriage. Getting medical help as soon as possible is the best way to help your partner.
