A narcissistic spouse is full of self-love, self-admiration and self-centeredness. Hence, it is very difficult to live with a narcissistic spouse. This difficulty again depends on to how much narcissistic your spouse is. While some may go to the extent of physical abuse, some may limit themselves to shouting and nagging

Narcissistic people are difficult to live with because they have no regard for feelings of others. They require excessive admiration and are often very sensitive to others remarks. Understanding their mindset and why they behave in certain ways can help you to deal with this problem to a certain extent

Dealing With a Narcissistic spouse:
Following are some tips to help you in dealing with a narcissistic spouse:

• Research: There are a number of books, articles regarding this disorder. Understanding this disorder and knowing what steps actually helped people will be very much beneficial
• Set boundaries: Do not approve of every action of your spouse. Do not accept to all the demands of your spouse. Instead, set firm boundaries and stick to them
• Be emotionally independent: Narcissistic individuals depress the people around them, rather than make them happy. Hence, try to avoid letting their remarks, abuses affect you. Find ways to be emotionally strong by speaking with friends, family, and going to church etc.
• Avoid getting upset/ angry: Getting angry, upset will only help a narcissist feel more in control of the situation. Try staying calm and avoid reacting to your partner’s comments
• Do not feel guilty: Do not feel responsible, guilty for the problems in your marriage even though your spouse blames you for it. You should remember the fact that your spouse has a problem and not you
• Therapy: Therapy can help a narcissistic person come into terms with reality. Often underlying fears, worries may fuel this behavior. Therapy can help the narcissistic individual in a systematic and constructive way

Dealing with a narcissistic spouse can be emotionally draining. If the abuse is severe, sometimes it is better to discontinue the relationship or stay away from your spouse. However, understanding your partner and therapy can help you in dealing with your spouse to a certain extent
