Smoking can be a tough addiction. If your spouse is addicted to it then it can be a very tough job for them to get rid of this addiction, but its not impossible however. Working together as a couple to overcome this problem will be beneficial for both your spouse and your marriage. Working together will help you both bond beautifully and strengthen your marriage with a renewed grace.
Here are some points that can prove to be very useful for both of you as a couple.
1) Keep Temptations Away: Make sure you keep any form of temptation away from your husband’s sight for e.g. ashtrays, cigarette packets etc. Change the channel if you see any advertisements of cigarette brands on the television. Avoid situations wherein you are asked to encounter a social situation where your spouse gets to meet people who are smoking while having a discussion.
2) Reinforce the motive behind his decision: Constantly reinforce the motive behind why your husband quit smoking. It could have been to live a healthy life or provide a healthy atmosphere for the children or overcoming the addiction. If possible arrange meetings with people who have overcome smoking. Let your spouse know that he/she is not the only one who is suffering from this addiction and that it is possible to quit smoking.
3) Constantly Encourage: It may be very difficult for your spouse to stick on to their decision and there may be times when they may crave to smoke. Instead of condemning them, empathize with them. Help them overcome this problem by organizing a busy schedule. Do fun things together. Go out for picnics, learn a dance, etc. Do things that will help your spouse keep their mind of the addiction.
Keep these points in mind and work out your marriage out of this addiction crisis. Though you cannot control your spouse’s action always, regular support is required in the initial phases.
